The Golf
Event Photo's
search for the 50
most beautiful golf holes in New Jersey took Dr. John T. Whiting and his wife
Buffy to the beautiful Roxiticus Golf Club on Sunday, August 16, 2009 to play
the golf course, gather background information and photograph the course and its
signature golf hole, the par 3 12th hole.
Roxiticus is an
Indian name meaning "meeting place", and the golf club is on the site of the
famous and historic Bliss Estate located on "Millionaires Mountain" in Mendham
where Indian trails converged and tribes would meet. Walter Bliss was a
New York financier who, like many wealthy businessmen of the early 1900s fell in
love with the beauty of the Somerset Hills of New Jersey and built his summer
home there.
With the passing of
the Bliss ownership of the Estate, a group of investors, including New York
Yankee pitchers, Ralph Terry and Jim Bouton, built the golf course. Terry
served as one of the early Golf Professionals for the Club and hosted the 1968
Pro Am which included Bobby Nichols, who fired a 65 to win the event, and that
year's PGA US Open Champion Lee Trevino.
A fire in
1979 and hard financial times were overcome in great part due to the leadership
of Bern Shanley. The Club became a member owned golf club in 1986 and has
prospered ever since.
The search for the
50 most beautiful golf holes in New Jersey visit was scheduled by Todd Hojnacki,
Head Golf Professional at the Roxiticus Golf Club, with the course's par 3 12th
hole nominated by Hojnacki. Photographs of the visit and the golf course
are posted on this web site. The chapter on the Roxiticus Golf Club is
being written for inclusion in the book, "The Search for the 50 Most Beautiful
Golf Holes in New Jersey" which will be published following visits and
photographing of nominated golf holes.
